Staying Connected While Traveling

by Rod Burkert on October 1, 2009

Our road trip has gotten great feedback from GoPetFriendly fans … thanks!  Several people have asked how we connected to the internet while we are out and about.  Hotel and coffee shop Wi-Fi certainly help.  But rather than leave something so important to chance, we bought the MiFi 2200 ultra-portable “hot spot” from Verizon.  This ultra-portable 3G EV-DO router weighs a few ounces, has the footprint of a credit card, and allows up to five devices to connect at the same time.  It cost about $100 (after a $50 Visa debit card rebate), along with a $30 activation fee.  We pay $60 per month for a 5 GB data plan.  Installation was easy, and it works as promised. Nothing cooler than (literally) driving down the road and being connected to the internet – just like the commercial.

A snapshot appears below.  The MiFi is pictured in line with an iPhone, a stick pen, and a business card.
