Our Product Review Disclosure Statement

by Rod Burkert on May 12, 2010

OK … we’re a little behind the curve. Up to now, we haven’t had a FTC disclosure policy. Why, you ask? Because we didn’t need one. The FTC policy requires bloggers to clearly disclose any freebies or payments they get from companies for reviewing their products. The only product review I’ve done since starting Take Paws was a few weeks ago for a dog leash - which we bought from a retailer, not a freebie sent by the manufacturer.

But lately, GoPetFriendly has been getting requests to do product reviews … stuff we’re getting for free! So I figured it’s about high time to get a policy in place. In the coming weeks, I’ll be writing about some products we use on our travels. Expect to read about some cool (and, ok, some mundane but still useful) items from BlanketID, Clean + Green, Bissell, and Bamboo Pet to name a few. So here’s our disclosure.

First and foremost, we here at GoPetFriendly.com love our dogs. Their health and well-being are of the utmost importance to us – as is the case with all of our pet-owning friends and fans.

We want readers to value our opinions, so we stick to what we know. Thus, we only review products that we believe are relevant and useful for people traveling with larger dogs – because that’s what we do. We say “larger” because our boys tip the scales at 40 and 70 pounds. We say “dogs” because allergic reactions send Amy and I into vapor lock when we’re around cats.

That said, here is our product review policy:

  • We tell our readers when a product has been sent to us for use or review by its manufacturer. Otherwise, we’ve purchased the product because we think it’s useful or interesting.
  • If you represent a company with a product that you think GoPetFriendly should “road test,” email Rod to have it considered for review. Accepting a product does not guarantee a review and coverage may or may not be positive. Reviews of products we receive will disclose its source, and products valued at over US $50 will either be given away to readers or donated to a rescue/shelter.
  • We do not accept text link advertising and all advertisements are clearly ads to be clicked on. We may earn a small commission whenever a visitor purchases an item from Amazon on our Books & Pet Gear page or from an advertisement on our site.

GoPetFriendly’s product reviews include a rating system to express our overall opinion of the item or service we write about. Our rating runs from 1 to 4 paw prints. Why only 4 and not a round number like 5 … because that’s all the paws our dogs have. Anything more would be a freak of nature!

4 = Excellent, pawsome in every way
3 = Good, a faux paw kept it from being top dog
2 = Fair, bad features suggest burying it
1 = Poor, this dog just won’t hunt

I have been thinking of doing something similar--like giving away items to shelters that are sent to me at Pet News and Views. It's a great idea.
