Fetching News – Week Ending 07.30.10

by Rod Burkert on July 30, 2010

All the news that's fit to chew on ...

For the past week, we’ve been exploring western South Dakota – the Black Hills, Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial, Sturgis, Deadwood, and Spearfish. We find ourselves strangely drawn to the landscape – vast prairie mixed with undulating hills and majestic rock formations dotted by scrappy spruce and pine trees, all populated with deer, elk, bison, cattle, and horses. I never would have allowed myself the time to visit these places were in not for GoPetFriendly, and so I am grateful for this adventure.

Without further ado, here is this week’s fetching news.

In many places in the country, it’s hot. Really hot. Please don’t leave your dog in the car in the scorching summer sun. If these words don’t carry enough weight, maybe a video of cookies baking in a hot car will. Jump over to Smartdogs’ Weblog to check it out.

Karen Friesecke, aka @DoggieStylish, unloaded with both barrels this week. She investigated Is Stem Cell Therapy a Viable Treatment for Dog Arthritis and How Not to Protect Your Dog From Heartworm Disease. When you read her analysis, you’ll think she’s a vet or a Ph.D. But no, she’s just Karen applying her dogged determination to get to the bottom of a story.

So you’re on the fence about raw feeding. You want to do some more investigation, but life is getting in the way. Well, if you don’t have the time to read a book, how about a 2,600 word “essay” covering most of the important stuff to help you get off the fence. My friend, @DoggyBytes, did just that in Raw Food Diets For Dogs: Yahoo Answer Gets Answered. I read this blog on a regular basis so I can safely say that this is one of his best posts ever.

Sooner or later, if you own a pet you’re going to lose her. It’s inevitable. Dr. V (@PawCurious) wrote Passage this week. On one level, it’s a post about whether you can or should be there with your pet during its euthanization. On another level, the post is about a much larger lesson on life – don’t judge.

And wrapping up the week. You can’t imagine the number of blogs we read … or maybe you can. We just started reading a new, extremely poignant one, Mary’s Dogs Blog.  It’s chronicling the journey of a couple fostering an extremely fearful rescue dog that was schedule for euthanization. The newbie blog is only four posts old so if you decide to follow, it won’t take long to get up to speed.

ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND! Do something fun with your pet and Fill Us In! :)

  • Thanks for the shout out! I'm just a girl trying to get to the bottom of some serious nonsense :)
  • The Road Dogs
Did you get our pee mail out in South Dakota? We left lots of it out there!
    The Road Dogs
  • Found your site through the Pet Blogger's Hop. I do a lot of road traveling with my dog, so your site is a joy to read!
  • I LOVE the video of the cookies being baked on the car dashboard. I think another one should be shot, but in a Walmart parking lot.

Thanks for the link love. =)
  • Have so much fun in South Dakota! Have you ever read Kathleen Norris' book, Dakota? It's a beautiful book and has made me want to visit the Dakotas ever since!

    Have a great weekend!
  • Hi Maggie! No, I haven't read that book - but I will. Rod and I are really loving it here. We'll be heading out of the Black Hills tomorrow, but we'll visit here again. It's a beautiful place and we are both drawn to it.
